Odor Measurement Standardization

Odor Sampling & Measurement Guidance Document

UPDATE 2008:

Anna Bokowa (ORTECH Environmental) has prepared suggested revisions to the Guideance Document. These suggested revisions are available for review below:
Suggested Revisions Submitted by Anna Bokowa - June 2008

The following document was presented by sub-committee Chair, Martha O'Brien, as the FINAL version of the guidance document.   This FINAL version has been submitted to ASTM for review in October 2002 as the ASTM E679 Threshold standard is reviewed at the ASTM annual meetings.  Click the document name to view or download the file.

  (guidelinedocFINAL8-23-02.doc - 65kb)

Background

A sub-committee of the A&WMA EE-6 Odor Committee was formed to develop a set of "guidelines" or "recommended practices" for the standardization of odor sampling procedures and odor measurement techniques by dynamic dilution olfactometry.

The current ASTM method for odor measurement is Method E679-91: Standard Practice for Determination of Odor and Taste Thresholds by a Forced-Choice Ascending Concentration Series Method of Limits.  Although this method outlines some basic procedures, a new set of guidelines needs to be developed which defines specific procedures and measurement parameters to allow odor measurement results to be comparable from one laboratory to another and from one instrument to another.

The European Committee for Standardization Organization (CEN) released prEN 13725, the European Union Olfactometry Standard, for public comment in late 1999.  The comment period closed 2/1/2000.  The draft is expected to become official in early 2001.
